What are my Rights?
NCLD/Youth believes that youth with disabilities need to Learn their history, Own their culture, Connect to their community, and Advocate for their Rights. This part of our website is dedicated to the advocating part. However, advocating is only successful if you have the right information in the right hands at the right time.
Youth with disabilities are often not educated well on their rights. A lot of times people either assume that you already know your rights, or assume that someone else in your life (a parent, family member, or other supportive adult) handles all of that. In order to be a self-determined person, you need to know your rights, and there are a lot of them.
As this project develops this part of our site is intended to have the youth and emerging leaders with developmental disabilities on our project develop materials to educate other youth and emerging leaders with developmental disabilities learn and gain competence in the different rights we have under laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Developmental Disabilities Civil Rights Act of 1990, Workforce Investment Act . These are just a few of the policies we will cover on this site. Check back soon.
